A Slow and Inconsistent Harvest
One of the key reasons behind the high price of pistachios is the long waiting period before the trees start producing fruit. Pistachio trees take approximately 10 to 12 years after planting before they yield their first harvest. Additionally, unlike many other nut-bearing trees that produce crops annually, pistachio trees only bear fruit once every two to three years.
A fully grown pistachio tree produces only 12 to 20 kg (26 to 44 lbs) of nuts per harvest, which is relatively low compared to other nut-producing trees.
